Joanna Burns

"I have a great interest in cross-party initiatives such as 50:50 Parliament - Tell Her To Stand, and the Parliament Project, that have been set up to encourage more women to seek office."

My name is Joanna Burns; I am a single mum of two children and work as an NHS administrator. I am passionate about women's equality in and out of the Labour Party and would love to see more women getting involved and putting themselves forward for positions within the party and also for public office. I am Women's Officer for my local Labour Party, and a member of the Labour Women's Network who are also great advocates in supporting Labour women in reaching their full potential and playing an even more influential role in the party. I would thoroughly recommend that women members join and support this great cause as they also host some fantastic courses and events too.

I have also taken a great interest in cross-party initiatives such as 50:50 Parliament - Tell Her To Stand, and the Parliament Project, that have been set up to encourage more women to seek office.

Indeed there is still a lot of work to be done in this area as currently men outnumber women 2:1 in parliament. If you click on the Parliament Project link it asks you to send a postcard to a woman who you believe would make a great councillor and I would encourage you all to send one to a female friend to give them the confidence boost they may need.
