"You were let down by UKIP in 2015, whose elected councillor didn't want the job and stepped down. You have also been let down by the Conservative elected to replace her, who attended only one of the seven meetings she was supposed to be at."

Dan Wilkinson

2018 Labour Candidate

Park Wood Ward

Dan Wilkinson stood in Park Wood ward in the 2018 Maidstone Borough Council elections.

Dan grew up and attended school locally. He is a Unite union rep and anti-austerity campaigner who became actively involved in local politics during a campaign to prevent the closure of four dementia care centres across Kent, including The Dorothy Lucy Centre.

He has also worked on homelessness campaigns, taking part in a sponsored overnight sleepout at The Gallagher Stadium, Maidstone.

Dan Wilkinson said, "I would like to thank every campaign volunteer, and every Labour voter. Our massive vote increase, coupled with Malcolm McKay's win for Labour in Shepway South, means we are now well on the way to winning back our heartland in terms of Maidstone. The area is clearly in need of Labour representation and we intend to provide it."

In 2017, Labour moved from 3rd place to 2nd in Park Wood, but more importantly won an increase of 26% in vote-share, almost trebling the number of votes gained.

Turnout was slightly higher than the most recent comparable election (2016,) and only 3 candidates were involved instead of 6.

Dan said, "You were let down by UKIP in 2015, whose elected councillor didn't want the job and stepped down. You have also been let down by the Conservative elected to replace her, who attended only one of the seven meetings she was supposed to be at.

I stand for a better deal for the residents of Park Wood:

  • Fighting to protect local services, like Heather House, from cuts forced on us by the Tory government;

  • Regular surgeries to offer advice on community matters, and financial concerns like Universal Credit and the Bedroom Tax;

  • Above all, I intend to treat the job with the seriousness it deserves, unlike the previous two councillors in this seat, and represent your interests at the town hall."
